Perthes disease:
Perthes disease is a rare osteonecrotic condition affecting the hip joint, especially femur head. It is noticed only in children who are very active/athletic or have genetic predisposition. It is more prevalent in boys than girls. This condition is characterized by severe pain of the affected hip joint, which is relieved from resting, inflammation and irritation of hip and groin area, pain associated with thigh, groin or knee on the affected side, reduced mobility of hip joint and relative stiffness. This condition is usually treated based on the stage of the disease progression and age of the children. The initial stages of this disease are treated with NSAIDs medications, limited physical activity and weight bearing restrictions. For ages 6-8 years, the use of cast may help to maintain the position. If it worsens over 10 years, then it can surgical corrected and maintained with physical therapy and restrictions in movement.
