How is IVF done step by step?
| Once it is confirmed that you are a suitable candidate for IVF or in-vitro fertilization, an infertility specialist uses a wide variety of laboratory techniques to assist reproduction in women. Daily injections of gonadotropins and HCG hormones is conducted to retrieve a healthy egg. Under intravenous sedation, eggs are taken from ovaries. A motile sperm is used to fertilize this embryo in the lab. Insemination of the mature embryo is carried out before the quality of the now fertilized embryo is assessed. On days three or five, a good quality embryo is ready for transplantation back inside the uterus. Sometimes, Laser assisted hatching is done before implantation. The implantation procedure itself is quite straight forward and lasts for less than half an hour performed using a catheter. When the implantation is successful, one may experience sensitive breasts and mild abdominal cramping. In case the IVF is unsuccessful, there could be vaginal bleeding in a few weeks indicating that the procedure needs to be repeated. |
