What is the main cause of Ringworm?
- Skin-to-skin contact and direct contact with an infected person or animal can transfer the fungus to the skin
- Touching contaminated objects and sharing personal items such as clothing, towels, combs, and brushes with an infected person can spread the infection
- Contact with infected animals, such as dogs, cats, and other animals that carry the fungus results in a ringworm infection
Can Ringworm be cured completely?
Specialist doctors for ringworm treatment advise that proper ringworm treatment can help completely cure the infection and remove the fungal infection from the skin. To do this, ringworm specialists usually follow the following treatment principles that include:
- Topical antifungal creams or ointments are the first-line treatment, and these medications are applied directly to the affected skin. They are usually used for a specific duration, as the ringworm specialist prescribes. Over-the-counter antifungal creams may work for mild cases, but more severe or persistent infections may require prescription-strength medications
- The ringworm specialist prescribes oral antifungal medications if the infection is severe, widespread, or affecting the nails or scalp. The treatment course may last several weeks to ensure complete fungus eradication
What are the 3 symptoms of Ringworm?
- Circular or Ring-like rash - A red, circular or ring-like rash appears on the skin. The rash is slightly raised and has a defined raised border, and the centre of the rash is often clear, giving it a ring-like appearance. A red, scaly patch without a clear ring may sometimes be seen
- Itching, irritation and discomfort are seen with ringworm infections. The affected area may feel dry, scaly, or inflamed, predisposing to scratching, which can worsen symptoms and cause the infection to spread to other areas
- Hair loss may be seen when ringworm affects the scalp. The hair may become brittle and break off near the scalp, leading to patches of hair loss
