Narcolepsy :
Narcolepsy can be referred to as a disease that affects sleep, as the brain cannot control the sleep and wake patterns. Narcolepsy leads to falling asleep during the daytime suddenly, and one cannot control that sleep. There are two types of narcolepsy, which include narcolepsy type 1 and narcolepsy type 2. The symptoms that can be observed in narcolepsy include uncontrollable sleep during the day, sleep while driving or writing, sudden loss of muscle tone, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations. Narcolepsy can be detected through diagnostic tests like a sleep study, maintenance of wakefulness test, multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), spinal tap, or lumbar puncture. The treatment advised for narcolepsy will be through medications and lifestyle changes. The lifestyle changes will involve scheduling sleep patterns and maintaining them, regular physical exercise, having short naps, cessation of alcohol and tobacco smoking, and managing stress.
