FESS :
FESS is the short form of functional endoscopic sinus surgery. As the name suggests, it is a surgical procedure used to treat problems in the sinuses. The procedure is done using an endoscope, which is a special scope that is thin and flexible. This device is inserted into the sinuses from the nostrils. It has a camera, light and surgical tool attached to its tip. An ENT surgeon performs this procedure to remove any obstructions that are not allowing mucus to drain. Besides the removal of unusual growths/obstructions, FESS is performed as a treatment for nasal polyps, sinusitis and severe sinus infections.
Before the procedure begins, the patient is given anaesthesia so they do not feel any pain or discomfort. Then, the surgeon clears the sinuses using a decongestant.
