What are the causes of Adhd?

The exact cause of ADHD is not known. However, a few risk factors may contribute to the development of ADHD. They include
  1. Genetic abnormality (kids with a family history of ADHD have a higher chance of developing ADHD)
  2. Exposure to certain environmental toxins
  3. Maternal drug or alcohol abuse during pregnancy
  4. Premature birth (children born before 37 weeks of gestation)
  5. Low birth weight
  6. Abnormalities in brain structure and function
  7. Brain injury

What are the symptoms of Adhd?

The symptoms of ADHD can vary from one child to another. Based on the severity of symptoms, we can categorize ADHD into mild, moderate, and severe. We can classify ADHD into three subtypes: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive or impulsive, or a combination of both.

Predominately inattentive- children who show a pattern of inattention may often show:

  • Have trouble staying focused on play or tasks
  • Need help to organize tasks and activities
  • Get easily distracted
  • Forgetfulness
  • Lose items needed for tasks or activities

Predominately impulsive or hyperactive-

  • Children often find difficulty in staying seated in a classroom or other situations
  • Impatience
  • Running around or climbing in situations when it is not appropriate
  • Are too talkative
  • Have difficulty waiting for their turn
  • Blurt out answers
  • Need help in doing activities or playing quietly

Other symptoms associated with ADHD:

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Dyspraxia (a condition that affects physical coordination)
  • Depression
  • Dyslexia (learning difficulty)
  • Seizures, etc.

Frequently asked questions

There is no cure for ADHD. The treatment modalities include cognitive behaviour therapy, psychotherapy, family therapy, nutritional feedback, biofeedback, meditation, yoga, etc.

Therapy in treating ADHD plays a vital role. The symptoms are initially managed by using medications. However, the treatment complements medications by addressing the behavioral aspects, psychological, and emotional aspects of ADHD.

In the majority of cases, ADHD symptoms improve with age. However, a few cases exist where adults diagnosed with ADHD at a young age continue to experience the pain.
