Rickets :
Rickets is a condition where bone weakens and softens due to inadequate intake of vitamin D. It may caused by dark skin tone, limited exposure to the outside world, excessive use of sunscreen, celiac disease, inherited conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, and kidney problems. Symptoms may include delayed growth, difficulty walking and running, delayed motor skills, severe pain in legs, spine, and pelvis, curved spine, bone weakness, teeth abnormalities, large abdomen, muscle weakness, bowed legs, thickened wrists and ankles, wild elbow joints, breastbone projection, large forehead, and abnormally shaped ribs. Diagnosis is made by X-rays, blood testing, urine testing, bone biopsies, and genetic testing. Rickets can be treated with calcium and vitamin D supplements, and for hereditary rickets, a combination of phosphate and high levels of special vitamin D supplements are used.
