A medical oncologist is a doctor with expertise in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Medical oncologists can treat all types of cancer and they are the primary healthcare providers for cancer patients. These are the doctors who order tests, determine the stage of cancer and work with other specialists to develop a treatment plan.
The qualifications of a medical oncologist include MBBS and MS in General Medicine, followed by an advanced degree such as DM in Medical Oncology. Medical oncologists may employ a number of treatment methods to help a patient recover from cancer. Some of the treatments provided by these oncologists include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy. Besides providing the treatments, these specialists continually monitor their patients and support their recovery. Moreover, they take steps to manage the side effects of the cancer treatments. They are also responsible for treating complications as they arise.
