Tuberculosis (TB) is a type of bacterial infection that usually develops in the lungs. However, the infection can also develop in the spine, brain or kidneys. Individuals affected by TB do not always have symptoms. The individuals who have TB but no symptoms are said to have dormant tuberculosis. However, inactive TB can become active in the body if the individual's immunity weakens.
Active tuberculosis can cause symptoms like fever, chest pain, tiredness, coughing, difficulty in breathing, night sweats and weight loss. The infection is diagnosed with blood or skin tests. In some cases, the doctor may also require tests like CT scan, chest X-ray and lung fluid test for a diagnosis. The treatment of TB usually involves a combination of antibiotics and other medication. But unlike many other infections, patients need to continually take the antibiotics for many months as prescribed by the doctor. Most patients find relief from the symptoms within a few weeks of taking the medicines.
