Thyroidectomy :

Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which a part or entire thyroid gland is removed under anesthesia. It can be a total thyroidectomy (removal of the entire gland), hemi thyroidectomy (removal of only half of the thyroid gland), subtotal thyroidectomy and or partial thyroidectomy etc and care should be taken to preserve the parathyroid glands(to prevent calcium deficiency). The indications for thyroidectomy includes thyroid cancers, benign thyroid nodules, hyperthyroididsm, thyroiditis,multinodular goitre , aesthetic reasons when the enlarged gland or enlarged nodules making the neck to look abnormal and also helps to relief the symptoms like compression, difficulty in swallowing , pain due to enlarged gland etc. After the surgery (total thyroidectomy) the patient has to be supplemented with life long synthetic thyroid (levothyroxine medication) and monitored regularly .
