Otosclerosis :
Otosclerosis refers to abnormal bone growth in the middle ear or inner ear, thus interfering with the sound's ability to travel. It can lead to hearing loss over a period of time. The common symptoms of otosclerosis are gradual hearing loss, balance issues, vertigo, ringing sensation in the ears, and dizziness. The risk of getting affected with otosclerosis is higher in females with similar family histories, and in the white race group and also in pregnant women who were previously prone to this disease. It is also seen more in people who are suffering with a disease called osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). This is diagnosed by an otolaryngologist using hearing tests like an audiogram and tympanogram. Otosclerosis is treated by advising hearing aids, stapedectomy, and cochlear implants.
