Kidney stones are hard stone-like clusters that form with the salts and minerals present in the urinary tract. They can be tiny. like a grain of salt or as large as a golf ball. Most kidney stones are small in size, but they can cause pain when they pass through the urinary tract. Kidney stones can cause pain in the lower back, side or belly. The pain may be sharp, dull or come in waves. Other symptoms include pain during urination, frequent urges to urinate, fever, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, and urine that is foul-smelling or cloudy. Kidney stones are diagnosed with urine tests, blood tests and imaging tests like ultrasound, CT scans and X-rays. Most kidney stones pass on their own. A doctor may prescribe medicines to help the stone pass and reduce the symptoms. If the stone is large, then it may need to be removed surgically.
