Hypothyroidism in Adults :
Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by dysfunction of the thyroid gland that does not make or release adequate thyroid hormone into the bloodstream, which reduces the rate of metabolism. A person with hypothyroidism experiences fatigue, weight gain, muscle weakness, numbness in hands, hoarseness, brain fog, depression, frequent menstrual periods, dry skin and anxiety. It can be caused by certain medications, congenital conditions, iodine deficiency, pituitary gland disorders, and thyroiditis. It can be diagnosed by an Endocrinologist through physical examination, blood tests, urinalysis, ultrasound, CT scan, and thyroid uptake scan. Early consultation and regular follow up with an Endocrinologist is recommended for better treatment plans which include medical management, iodine therapy, and dietary modifications to avoid any further complications like Goitre, heart problems, peripheral neuropathy, birth defects and myxedema coma.
