Brachytherapy :
Brachytherapy is a procedure where a radioactive material is placed inside the body. It is also called as internal radiation. Radioactive material may include radioactive seeds, pellets, capsules and implants inside the tumor. Types of brachytherapy include temporary implants that include low dose rate brachytherapy, high dose rate brachytherapy and permanent implants. Brachytherapy treats cancers like brain cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, esophageal cancer, eye cancer, gallbladder cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, rectal cancer, prostate cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, skin cancer and vaginal cancer. Risks of brachytherapy include pain due to staying in single position, extreme tiredness, failure to effect the growth of the tumor, sores in the mouth and throat, urinary and digestive problems, damage to the healthy organs. Before the procedure, anesthesia is given to free from the pain and during the procedure, a needle is placed at the site of the cancer and a device is passed via a nearby opening.
