Bariatric Surgery :

Bariatric surgery also known as weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure of the gastro intestinal tract (mainly stomach and small intestine) that aims in reducing weight and overall long term well being of people suffering from severe obesity. It is performed on people with body mass index(BMI) >40 or with BMI>35 and associated obesity co-morbidities like type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, non alcoholic steatohepatitis(NAFLD), high blood pressure, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, high cholestrol levels, etc. There are different surgical techniques like Sleeve gastrectomy (most commonly performed), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch that reduces the stomach size thus allowing only to have small quantities of food,reducing the hunger signals by altering the gut hormones and nutrient absorption. It helps patients with morbid obesity who have not reduced weight despite diet and exercise and avoid landing in complications of obesity.
