Ptosis :
Ptosis is described as an eye problem characterized by drooping of the eyelids over the eye, which causes impairment of vision. Ptosis is categorized into two types, namely, congenital ptosis and acquired ptosis. The significant signs of ptosis include excessive rubbing of eyes, decreased or impaired vision, increased tearing, eyebrow arching to compensate for vision obstruction, children may tip their heads back to see, tiredness and pain around the eyes. The factors responsible for causing ptosis include stye, myasthenia gravis, Horner syndrome, stroke, external ophthalmoplegia and a tumour. The diagnostic tests that are helpful to evaluate this eye condition are slit lamp examination, ocular motility test, Tensilon test and visual field testing. The management of ptosis depends on the causative factor and surgery is the best option if it occurs due to ageing. The potential complications of ptosis, if left untreated, include amblyopia, astigmatism and chin-up position causing developmental delays and neck problems.
