Blood in Sputum :
Blood in sputum, also known as hemoptysis, is described as spitting up or coughing blood mixed with mucus from the lungs and throat. This condition usually indicates an infection caused by various factors such as pneumonia, bronchitis and tuberculosis. Blood in sputum also occurs due to other conditions like cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, vasculitis, mitral valve stenosis, complications from lupus, congestive heart failure, irritation from bronchoscopy, pulmonary embolism, drug use (cocaine/ crack), using blood thinners, infection by parasites, granulomatosis with polyangitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, injury to the arteries of the lungs, lung cancer, pulmonary aspiration, airway obstruction in children and blood entering your throat from nose, tonsils or teeth. One should consult a doctor immediately if blood in sputum is accompanied by other symptoms like fever, night sweats, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, rapid or severe weight loss and blood in urine (hematuria) or stools.
