Throat Infection :
Throat infection can be caused due to underlying conditions such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis and laryngitis. It can be caused either due to viral or bacterial infections, allergens or irritants. Difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in speech, sore throat, hoarseness of voice, fever, swollen lymph nodes and white patches on the mucosal membrane of the throat with pus discharge are some of the common symptoms of throat infection. An ENT surgeon or general physician evaluates the symptomatology and conducts investigatory swab tests for further evaluation. Treatment with oral antibiotics, NSAIDs, throat lozenges, gargle, and adequate hydration with water and fluids is the best way to control throat infection. If left untreated, throat infection can spread to other tissues causing secondary complications. If the symptoms exacerbate, surgical intervention of underlying medical conditions is advised. Some of the surgical procedures to manage recurrent throat infections include tonsillectomy and laryngectomy.
