Tricuspid valve disease :
Similar to the mitral valve on the left side of the heart, there is another type of valve called the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart between the right atrium and ventricle. If it doesn't function properly or gets diseased, it is known as tricuspid valve disease. It may be congenital or acquired over a period of time. The three types of tricuspid valve disease include tricuspid atresia, which is a birth defect, tricuspid regurgitation, where the tricuspid valve has a leakage, and tricuspid stenosis, where the tricuspid valve gets stiffened. Symptoms of tricuspid valve disease include fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling in the knees and legs, inflammation of the liver, and cold extremities. Diagnosis is made by certain investigations like chest X-ray, echocardiogram, ECG, stress test, transoesophageal echocardiogram, and basic blood investigations. Treatment includes medical management as well as surgical management. Medical management includes administration of anti-arrhythmic medications, anticoagulants, and diuretics. Surgical options include a tricuspid valve surgery. A regular follow-up with a cardiologist is mandated after the surgery.
