Tongue Cancer :
Tongue cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that starts at the hyoid bone and ends at the floor of the mouth. It is mainly caused due to mutations in DNA. Most common type of tongue cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. Symptoms of tongue cancer are white and red patches on the tongue, spontaneous bleeding, lump on the side of the tongue, ulcer on the tongue, thickening of mucous membrane, chronic pharyngitis, neck pain, ear pain, numbness, burning sensation, difficulty in chewing and swallowing, jaw swelling, hoarseness, loose teeth and changes in the dentures fitting. Risk factors of tongue cancer are HPV, tobacco chewing, betel nut, and a history of oral cancers, especially squamous cell carcinoma. Diagnosis is made by using fluorescent light in the mouth to detect abnormality and by palpating the swollen lymph nodes. Treatments include tongue cancer surgery, radiation therapy, and drug therapies.
