Thyroidectomy :
Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. Thyroidectomy helps in the management of diseases like hyperthyroidism, goiter, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancers like papillary thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, primary thyroid lymphoma, anaplastic thyroid cancer and metastasis to the thyroid from cancer elsewhere in the body. Thyroidectomy is classified into two types, namely, partial and total thyroidectomies. Partial thyroidectomy comprises of various other types, namely, hemi-thyroidectomy, open thyroid biopsy and isthmusectomy. The side effects that may arise after thyroidectomy include injury to the laryngeal nerve that can cause permanent or temporary hoarseness, bleeding after surgery resulting in acute respiratory distress and damage to parathyroid glands. There is a high chance for these complications to occur after the procedure, if the patient is undergoing a second thyroid surgery, in the presence of a substernal goiter or if there is a an invasive tumor that has spread to nearby lymph nodes of the neck.
