Spirometry :
Spirometry is a common pulmonary function test, also called a lung function test. Spirometry is used to measure the flow of air into the lungs, inhaled and exhaled out of the lungs. Spirometry is useful in the diagnosis of bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis. Spirometry helps in the determination of lung capacity, detects early changes in lung function, identifies narrowed airways, and also helps in the identification of respiratory complications. Spirometry is indicated in case of cough with mucus, chest tightness, shortness of breath, difficulty taking deep breaths, and wheezing. Spirometry is a procedure done by a pulmonologist in which the patient is seated in a chair wearing a nose clip and breathes into a tube that is connected to a spirometer.
