Renal Angioplasty :
Renal angioplasty refers to a surgery that is performed to widen the narrowed or blocked blood vessels which normally supply blood to the kidneys. Renal angioplasty is indicated to prevent renal artery stenosis and blockages in the arteries that may lead to kidney damage and high blood pressure. An interventional radiologist performs this minimally invasive procedure by inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin, which is guided to the narrowed renal artery and then inflating a balloon at the tip of the catheter to widens the artery. Prior to renal angioplasty, various tests like CT, MRI, duplex Doppler ultrasonography, and angiogram are conducted. The advantages of renal angioplasty include: it reduces high blood pressure, prevents kidney damage, restores the blood flow, and provides a fast recovery. The side effects that may arise after renal angioplasty include bleeding at the entry site, damage to the kidney, blockage or stent migration, allergic reaction to the contrast dye, and narrowing of the artery again over time.
