Ptosis :
Ptosis is a condition in which the upper eyelid sags over the eye and partially or fully covers it. The condition occurs when the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid doesn't work as it should. Ptosis can be present since birth or develop later in life.
An ophthalmologist can diagnose this condition with tests such as a slit lamp exam, eye movement test, visual field testing and Tensilon test. The treatment of ptosis depends on the severity of the drooping of the eyelid. If ptosis does not affect the vision and its appearance is not concerning, then treatment may not be required. If either of these factors is concerning, then an ophthalmologist may recommend surgery. Ptosis surgery involves cutting open the skin of the eyelid and tightening the muscle that controls the eyelid.
