Pericardial Effusion :
The building of fluid around the sac of the heart, which is called pericardium, is known as pericardial effusion. Pericardial effusion should be treated immediately, and if left, it would lead to cardiac tamponade and cardiogenic shock, too. Some of the common symptoms a patient with a pericardial effusion might experience are dizziness, palpitations, chest pain, fainting, syncope, cyanosis, and shortness of breath. The most common causes for developing a pericardial effusion are infections such as HIV, Tuberculosis, hormonal disorders, heart failure, and kidney failure. Patients undergoing radiation therapy are more prone to have pericardial effusion. Diagnosis of pericardial effusion is made by a thorough physical examination. Investigations a cardiologist might advise include chest x-ray, 2D echocardiogram, CT scan of the chest, MRI of the heart, and basic blood investigations like Troponin, thyroid levels, and complete blood picture. Treatment of pericardial effusion includes a needle aspiration, which is called pericardiocentesis, using a fluoroscopy or through a video-assisted thoracic surgery. However, the underlying cause needs to be identified and treated accordingly.
