Otosclerosis :
Otosclerosis is described as abnormal bone growth in the middle ear or inner ear, resulting in hearing loss over a period of time. Otosclerosis interferes with the sound's ability to travel and eventually presents significant signs such as ringing sensation in the ears, gradual hearing loss, balance issues, dizziness and vertigo. The risk factors of otosclerosis are higher in pregnant women who were previously prone to this disease , in females with a similar family history and in people suffering from a disease called osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). An otolaryngologist is a doctor who evaluates the patient by conducting hearing tests like an audiogram and a tympanogram, and a CT scan to diagnose this condition. The management of otosclerosis involves various options like using hearing aids to hear and communicate, surgical procedures like cochlear implants and stapedectomy to improve hearing.
