Nerve injuries :
Nerve injuries can affect part of the nerve or whole nerve and can be caused by pressure, stretching, bruising, and cuts. Types of nerves in the body are autonomic nerves, motor nerves, and sensory nerves. Symptoms of autonomic nerve injury are unable to sense chest pain, hyperhidrosis, anhidrosis, lightheadedness, dry eyes and mouth, constipation, bladder dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction. Motor nerve injury symptoms are weakness, muscle atrophy, twitching, and paralysis. Sensory nerve injury symptoms are pain, sensitivity, numbness, tingling, burning, and positional awareness problems. It may caused by conditions like autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, cancer, compression, trauma, diabetes, motor neuron diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and infectious diseases like HIV, Lyme disease, herpes virus, and hepatitis C. Diagnosis is made by electromyography, nerve conduction study, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound. Treatment depends on the type of injury, type of nerve injury, severity of injury and symptoms, patient's age, and health. Surgical treatments include decompression, neurolysis, nerve repair, and nerve transfer.
