Mastoiditis :
Mastoiditis is a bacterial infection that begins in the middle ear and extends to the largest bone behind the ear, which is the temporal bone. Mastoiditis is classified into two types, such as acute and chronic conditions, based on the duration. The significant signs induced by mastoiditis are throbbing ear pain for a long time, ear drainage that contains pus, doughy or soft-feeling bone behind the ear, swollen skin or redness behind the affected ear, headache, fever, vertigo, worsening hearing loss, double vision and confusion. If left untreated, mastoiditis may complicate to facial paralysis, inner ear infection (labyrinthitis), partial or complete hearing loss, encephalitis, meningitis and sepsis. To prevent mastoiditis, the measures to be taken include vaccinating the child at a young age, quitting smoking, limiting the use of pacifiers, preventing cold and controlling allergies. Mastoiditis can be treated by taking medications and surgical methods like mastoidectomy and myringotomy.
