Leprosy :
Leprosy is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae and affects the nerves of the eyes, skin, nose lining, and upper respiratory tract. Types include tuberculoid leprosy, lepromatous leprosy, and borderline leprosy. Symptoms include loss of pigmentation, absent sensations, numbness, tingling, painless wounds, muscle weakness, thick skin, enlarged peripheral nerves, loss of eyelashes or eyebrows, nasal congestion, nosebleeds, paralysis, vision loss, nose disfigurement, damage to the hands and feet and chronic ulcers. Diagnosis can be made by performing a skin biopsy. It is treated with multidrug therapy that includes different types of antibiotics and steroids.
