Hole in Heart :
The heart is an essential organ that has four chambers. It has two chambers on the left and two on the right. The left and right chambers are separated by a wall known as the atrial septum. In some individuals, the heart does not develop this wall correctly while in the womb, resulting in a hole in the atrial septum. When a child is born with a hole in the heart, it is said that they have an atrial septal defect. The hole may not cause any problems in childhood, but it can cause symptoms in adulthood and put the individual's life at risk.
A paediatrician may suspect a child has a hole in the heart if they hear unusual sounds during a stethoscope examination. The diagnosis of atrial septum defect usually involves a chest X-ray, EKG and CT scan. If the size of the hole is negligible, then treatment may not be required.
