Hoarseness is a condition where the pitch and quality of voice change and become weak, scratchy, and husky. It is very common and affects people who smoke and use their voice professionally, like singers, teachers, actors, and call center employees. It is caused by laryngitis, chronic acid reflux, inhalation of respiratory tract irritants, vocal cord hemorrhage, vocal nodules, cysts and polyps, vocal cord paralysis, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, spasmodic dysphonia, neurological diseases and cancers like laryngeal cancer, lung cancer, and throat cancer. Diagnosis is made by laryngoscopy, video stroboscopy, CT scan, MRI, and biopsy. It can be prevented by quitting smoking, avoiding beverages like alcohol and coffee, using humidifiers, avoiding spicy foods, avoid activities like speaking for a long time.
