Hirsutism :
Hirsutism is a condition in which an individual experiences excess hair growth. The condition affects females more than males and causes the growth of dark and coarse hair on the face, chest, abdomen or back. Hirsutism can cause distress and tends to occur in females with PCOS or adrenal hyperplasia.
Besides the growth of unusually dark and thick hair, hirsutism can cause virilization. Virilization causes a female to develop characteristics of a male such as a deeper voice and bigger muscles.A doctor can diagnose hirsutism with a physical examination and blood tests. In some cases, the doctor may order imaging tests like an ultrasound and an X-ray. The treatment of hirsutism involves medications and weight loss. In most cases, hirsutism is managed with shaving and waxing. In some cases, a doctor may suggest procedures such as laser hair removal as a long-term solution.
