Gastrectomy :
A gastrectomy simply means the surgical removal of part or all of the stomach. It is highly common for the treatment of cancers affecting the stomach, bad ulcers, or nearly the complete non-functioning of the stomach from other causes, which include obesity, tumors etc. Normally, only the infected portion of the stomach is removed through a partial gastrectomy. A total gastrectomy involves removing the stomach completely. In a total gastrectomy, the esophagus is taken directly into contact with the small intestine so that food could pass through the digestive system. After surgery patients often tend to experience digestive changes. This patient would be advised dietary changes in eating very small meals and avoiding variety of foods. It takes some days before recovery goes back to the regular pattern of living in the hospital before going home. Nutrition counseling and guidance ensure that the body makes complete recovery and proper care from the doctor ensures complete recovery over period of time. Gastrectomy is also suggested in patients suffering with morbid obesity who were unable to reduce their weight by various methods.
