Endophthalmitis :
Endophthalmitis is a swelling and an infection of fluids in the eye which is caused by a bacteria, which may spread through external source, blood stream or even by an injury. Depending on the cause they are classified into exogenous and endogenous. Symptoms may include severe pain in the eyes, redness, swelling, blurring or loss of vision and at times discharge from the eyes. In addition the patient may develop photophobia, spots in vision or eye floaters.
Diagnosis is generally done by examination of the eye, and ultrasound of the eye. Treatment of endophthalmitis is generallymedical treatment which may include antibiotics or antifungal medication. Intra vitreous injections might also be advised in certain conditions. Early diagnosis ensures that immediate treatment is followed to retain the majority of the vision, and a visit to ophthalmologist will ensure adequate evaluation and recording of the progress made, thus ensuring that the infection is indeed cleared. Always wearing a protective glasses especially during working hours, regular washing of hands are some of the preventive measures to be taken to prevent endophthalmitis.
