Dysphagia :
Dysphagia is a condition where a person would find difficulty in swallowing often with pain. It can be a result of multiple conditions such as neurological disorders [ ALS, parkinsons, multiple sclerosis etc.], nerve damage, muscle disorders [ achalasia; muscle dystrophy] , or even a physical obstruction in throat such as a tumour.
Untreated dysphagia might lead to aspiration which might further cause pneumonia. Barium swallow, endoscopy are some of the interventions used to diagnose the condition. A consultation with gastroenterologist would help in diagnosis and further evaluation of severity of the condition and decide further course of action. Its advisable for a consultation with an ENT specialist too for further evaluation. A combined approach of both medical management and surgical approach might be needed accordingly.
