Depression :
Depression is a mental health condition that falls under the umbrella of mood disorders. Depression makes an individual feel sad and disinterested. An affected individual may also find it difficult to sleep, eat, think and remember things. It is important to note that depression is not another word for sadness. It involves a persistent sadness that continues for at least two weeks, along with other symptoms. Some of the other symptoms of depression include tiredness, appetite changes, irritability, headaches, stomach aches, sexual dysfunction and suicidal thoughts.
The possible causes of depression include changes in brain chemistry, stressful life events, genetic changes and chronic illnesses. In some cases, depression can develop as a side effect of certain medications and substances. A psychiatrist or a psychologist can diagnose depression by inquiring about the symptoms and medical history. Its treatment may involve medications, various therapies and lifestyle changes.
