COPD :
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a serious condition that affects the respiratory system. The disease causes permanent and irreversible damage to the airways and lungs. More specifically, the disease causes the airways and air sacs in the lungs to become less elastic. It can also cause destruction of the walls between the alveoli and scarring, narrowing and swelling of the airways.
An individual affected by COPD may experience symptoms like wheezing, coughing with mucus, and changes in skin colour. Moreover, the shape of the chest may change, and it may appear like a barrel. The underlying cause of COPD is usually smoking. But it can also develop due to family history or exposure to toxins. A pulmonologist can diagnose COPD with tests such as CT scans, pulmonary function tests, and an EKG. COPD has no cure, but treatment can provide relief from the symptoms. The treatment of this disease may involve oxygen therapy, medications, positive airway pressure, and surgery.
