Colposcopy :
Colposcopy is a painless procedure where a gynecologist or colposcopist uses a colposcope, a lighted microscope that helps in magnifying the tissues that line the cervix and vagina. It checks for cells that could become dysplastic. A smooth, pink cervical surface is normal. If any abnormality is found, a sample is taken and sent for biopsy. It helps in diagnosing abnormal patterns of blood vessels, genital warts, cervical inflammation, polyps, whitish patches, dysplastic changes in cervical tissue, vaginal tissue, and vulva, and cancer of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. Risks of the procedure include heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pain in the lower abdomen, fever, chills, infection, and foul odor of vaginal discharge.
