Claudication Pain :
Claudication pain is described as muscle pain experienced during activity and stops while at rest. Claudication pain is associated with other symptoms such as cramp- like, dull or aching pain, weakness, tiredness, numbness and tingling. The factors causing claudication pain include atherosclerosis and peripheral artery disease. These conditions increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. The risk factors associated with claudication pain include tobacco usage, diabetes, kidney disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and atherosclerosis in arteries in the heart or brain. The diagnostic tests conducted to evaluate for claudication pain include ankle brachial index, angiography and ultrasound. The treatment plan to manage claudication pain includes lifestyle modifications, medications that lower the blood pressure, lower the cholesterol, lower the blood sugar level, prevent clotting to increase blood flow and open the arteries and minimally invasive surgical procedures like angioplasty, stenting and bypass surgery.
