Secretions from the pancreas, liver, and gallbladder reach the intestines via a network of ducts called the bile ducts. Cholangiocarcinoma is a type of cancer that can develop in these bile ducts. Surgery offers the highest odds of curing this type of cancer. The kind of surgery performed depends on the location of the tumor. The majority of the patients with this cancer are treated by inserting a stent, which provides relief from symptoms like jaundice. If a large tumor is present inside the liver, a portion of the liver may be removed (hepatectomy). On the other hand, if tumors are present near the pancreas, a procedure called pancreatoduodenectomy may be recommended. It involves removing parts of the bile duct, stomach, pancreas, and intestine. Then, the healthy parts of these organs are joined to allow digestion to occur normally.
