Cervical Cerclage :
Cervical cerclage is a treatment method for maintaining the cervix closed to prevent early childbirth during pregnancy. Cervical cerclage can be done when the cervix is weak and for the baby to be safe in the womb. Cervical cerclage can also be performed when there are miscarriages in the past due to damage to cervix or abnormal shaped uterus, had abortions in the past in second trimester due to weaker cervix. Cervical cerclage can be done around 12 weeks to 14 weeks of pregnancy. While doing the procedure of cervical cerclage, anesthesia is given and cervix is sutured to remain close. When there is high risk of preterm labor, it is important to discuss with the gynecologist to have cervical cerclage. The risks that are seen with cervical cerclage includes bleeding, damage to cervix, infection, cervical stenosis, tearing of cervix or uterus, preterm labor, premature rupturing of membranes, and scar tissue formation on the cervix.
