The carotid arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. These arteries pass through the left and right sides of the neck. The carotid angioplasty is a procedure that is performed to clear any blockages in these arteries. The blockages are usually made up of plaque, which is a wax-like substance made from fats, cholesterol and other substances.
A carotid angioplasty begins with giving the patient anaesthesia and making a small cut in the groin. The surgeon then inserts a tube called a catheter into an artery via the cut. Next, the catheter is guided into the carotid arteries using special scanning equipment. When the catheter reaches the site of the blockage, the surgeon expands a metal balloon near the site via the catheter.
