Black Stool :
Black stool can be referred to as melena. When there is blood in the stools, it can be known as black stools. The blood that is travelling through the digestive tract turns black. The black stools can occur due to inflammation, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal perforation, swollen veins in the stomach or esophagus, erosion of the lining in the stomach, stomach cancer, or a tear in the esophagus. The other causes of black stools will be activated charcoal, dark food items like iron supplements, and blueberries taken in large quantities. The symptoms that can be seen along with black stools will be pain in the abdomen, back pain, chest pain, and vomiting of blood. The diagnosis of the cause of black stools can be done with a blood test, a CT angiogram, a CT scan, or an endoscopy. Black stools can be treated by transfusion of blood to compensate for the loss of blood, medications to treat the ulcers, and other gastric issues.
