An angioplasty is a heart procedure that is performed when the heart's arteries become clogged with a waxy substance called plaque. Such a clogging of the arteries is called atherosclerosis. Angioplasty is the treatment for atherosclerosis and this procedure does not involve much cutting or stitching.
Angioplasty begins by putting the patient to sleep and making a keyhole-sized cut in the groin. Then, the surgeon inserts a flexible tube called a catheter into an artery via the cut. Next, the surgeon guides the catheter into the heart using special scanning equipment. When the catheter reaches the blocked artery in the heart, the surgeon opens a metal balloon present at the tip of the catheter. The balloon widens the artery as it expands, which clears the clogging in the artery.
