Athlete's Foot :
Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection of the skin affecting the foot, particularly the area between the toes. Basically, it is caused due to ring worm. Patients with underlying disease like diabetes mellitus and weakened immune system are more prone to develop it. A patient can get infected by contact with the contaminated surfaces like swimming pools, showers and indirectly by using items such as towels, shoes, and socks that are used by other infected people. Athlete's foot is contagious, and the diagnosis is done by skin biopsy and physical examination. The symptoms of athlete's foot are itching, burning sensations, cracked or peeling and scaly skin on the feet. At worst levels, reddening and blistering may be experienced, and walking may become painful. The treatment is usually antifungal cream or powder that is available in over-the-counter drugs. Prevention measures include keeping your legs clean and dry, usage of breathable shoes for air ventilation, and frequently changing socks to avoid re-infection. Athlete's foot if left untreated might spread to other parts of the body like groin, hands and nails.
