Peripheral Arterial Disease :

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a vascular disorder that causes abnormal narrowing of arteries other than those that supply the heart and brain thus reducing the blood flow to the legs and other extremities. PAD most commonly affects the legs but it can also affect those arteries supplying arms, neck and kidneys. The greatest risk factor for PAD is cigarette smoking. Other risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, high blood cholesterol, obesity, family history, atherosclerosis (plaque buildup ) , artery spasm, blood clots, trauma , fibromuscular dysplasia, vasculitis etc,.

PAD presents classically as leg pain while walking which resolves with rest and is known as intermittent claudication. Other symptoms include weakness or numbness in the legs, cold feet/legs, poor wound healing, gangrene, skin ulcers, bluish skin abnormal hair and nail growth in the affected leg. Complications may include an infection or tissue death which may require amputation. Diagnosis requires physical exam and history of symptoms followed by imaging like CT scans, MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) or ultrasound etc,. Treatment includes lifestyle modifications (quit smoking), medication (treat underlying diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol levels etc. , revascularization by angioplasty, atherectomy , vascular by-pass grafting etc.
