Frequently asked questions

A psychiatrist is a medical professional who specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions and behavioral disorders. The various subspecialties of psychiatry include General Adult Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Learning Disability Psychiatry or Educational Pyschiatry, and Psychotherapy.

A psychiatrist would have completed 5 1/2 years of primary medical training through MBBS, followed by eiher a 2 year training in Diploma Pyschiatric Medicine or DPM, or 3 year training in MD Psychiatry. Additional certifications and training in related subjects or sub specializations may also be further done.

A consultation with a psychiatrist is advisable if there are mental health problems or behavioral changes that are affecting day to day life. These can include sleep disturbances, mood disturbances, substance abuse, lack of control over emotions or temper tantrums, poor performance at work or school, excessive anxiety, sadness, avoiding social situations, suicidal tendencies, self harm, risky behavior, phobias, etc.

Some of the conditions that are commonly seen in clinical practice and treated by psychiatrists include substance abuse, alcohol addiction, mood disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, dementia, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease, language disabilities, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, sleep wake disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), etc.

Although both psychiatrists and psychologists deal with mental health and behavioral disorders, the main difference between the two is that psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe medications for the management of mental health disorders, whereas psychologists are not allowed to do so, and only help with the management of the condition through psychotherapy and counseling.

The diagnostic tests that are done by psychiatrists to diagnose a mental health problem would generally include a physical examination to rule out any physical conditions that may be responsible for the symptoms exhibited, some laboratory tests such as thyroid function tests, other hormone tests, and routine blood investigations to rule out any hormonal causes of the problem, and a psychological evaluation which can comprise of questioning, psychological and behavioral response tests, and observation of the affected invidual, feedback from close relatives or family members, and DSM-5 guidelines to confirm and establish the diagnosis.

The cost of consultation with a Psychiatrist can range between Rs.750 - Rs.1,500 or more depending on the experience and the location of practice of the specialist. Counseling and therapy sessions when required can cost between Rs.1,500 - Rs.3000 or more, and the number of sessions that would be required depend on the type of problem being treated and the response and progress of the individual.

When a visit is scheduled with a psychiatrist it is important to carry along a note of symptoms, important life events such as tragedies, etc., medical reports and medication history, and questionnaire about the type of mental health issue that may be present, the kind of treatment that is needed, the need for medications, the duration of the treatment, side effects of the treatment, suggested self help measures, etc. During the visit, the specialist will inquire about the nature and duration of symptoms, their effect on day to day life, any previous history of mental health issues, family history of mental health issues, etc. The psychiatrist would then proceed to perform a basic clinical examination, and follow it up with some tests or questionnaires, and also suggest any blood tests if required.
