A paediatric hematologist is a pediatrician who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of blood and bone marrow in children and young adults. To become a pediatric hematologist, one has to complete their graduation and obtain an MBBS degree, pursue post graduation like MD or DNB in Pediatrics, followed by doing a super specialty in Pediatric Hematology- Oncology. A pediatric hematologist commonly treats conditions in children and young adults including cancers like bone tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors and brain tumors, diseases of blood cells such as disorders of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, along with clotting and bleeding disorders in children. A patient is referred to a pediatric hematologist if they experience symptoms such as unexplained bruising or bleeding, anemia or iron deficiency, low platelet count, abnormal blood work, bone pain or fatigue, frequent infections, swollen lymph nodes or enlarged spleen, a family history of early blood clots and an abnormal newborn screen.
