Mastectomy :

Mastectomy is a surgical procedure in which one or both breasts are partially or completely removed to treat and prevent the spread of the breast cancer. It can be different types depending upon the type and extent of cancer ie,. total mastectomy (entire breast is removed), modified radical mastectomy, partial mastectomy, nipple sparing mastectomy etc. It is a major surgical procedure done by a surgical oncologist under general anesthesia. After removal of the breast tissue it is important to give education,emotional support and counselling regarding the reconstruction options. Regular followup for monitoring of cancer remission and preventing recurrence is necessary after the surgery.
