Melasma majorly affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and above the upper lip and the forehead and affects any part of the skin that is exposed to sunlight. Pregnant women are more prone to melasma due to hormonal changes and increased levels of hormones progesterone and estrogen. Melasma is classified into several types such as dermal, epidermal and mixed melasma. The causative factors of melasma are contraceptive therapy, antiseizure medications, estrogen or diethylstilbestrol, hypothyroidism, genetic conditions, LED screens, cosmetics, phototoxic drugs like NSAIDS, pregnancy, antibiotics and targeted therapies, scented soaps, skin care products and tanning beds. Melasma patients should take necessary care and avoid the triggering factors and causative factors and the treatment plan for melasma depends on the causative factor.
